If you’re craving a healthier, homemade alternative to takeout beef and broccoli, this recipe is your answer! Tender strips of flank steak, crisp broccoli, and a savory sauce combine to create the ultimate flavor-packed stir fry. You can control the amount of sugar, sodium, and fat, making this a healthier choice than traditional takeout.
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ lbs flank steak, sliced into ¼ inch strips (or tri-tip, beef skirt, or flat iron steak)
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
- ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce (or ¼ cup regular soy sauce)
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar (or non-calorie sweetener like monk fruit for a healthier option)
- 5 cups broccoli florets
- 3 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
- 2 teaspoons sriracha (optional, for heat)
- Sesame seeds (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Prep the beef: In a large zipper bag, toss the sliced flank steak with cornstarch until each strip is evenly coated.
- Make the sauce: In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and freshly grated ginger, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant (be careful not to burn the garlic). Pour in the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, and sriracha (if using). Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes, until it thickens slightly and the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Cook the beef: In a large skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef strips and cook until they are browned and crispy on all sides.
- Add the broccoli: Once the beef is browned, add the broccoli florets to the pan and cook for another 3 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender yet still slightly crisp.
- Combine: Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and broccoli. Continue cooking for 5-6 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the beef and broccoli. Stir occasionally to ensure the ingredients are well combined.
- Garnish and serve: Top the beef and broccoli with freshly sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Serve hot, and enjoy!
