This Caprese Salad is a fresh and flavorful Italian classic. Made with ripe tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh basil, and drizzled with olive oil and balsamic glaze, it’s simplicity at its best!

Ingredients

(Serves 6 as a side salad)

  • 1 1/2 lbs ripe tomatoes (3–4 medium), sliced 1/4” thick
  • 12–16 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced 1/4” thick
  • 1 bunch fresh basil (1/3 cup basil leaves)
  • 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic glaze, or to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients
    • Slice the tomatoes and mozzarella into 1/4-inch thick pieces.
  2. Assemble the Salad
    • On a serving platter, layer the tomato slices and mozzarella, alternating each piece so both are visible.
    • Tuck fresh basil leaves between the cheese and tomato slices for a vibrant, layered presentation.
  3. Season and Dress
    • Sprinkle the salad generously with sea salt and black pepper.
    • Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the entire dish.
    • Add balsamic glaze (optional) to taste for a tangy sweetness.
  4. Serve
    • Serve immediately and enjoy this fresh, classic salad!

Tips

  • Tomatoes: Use the ripest, freshest tomatoes you can find for the best flavor. Heirloom tomatoes are an excellent choice!
  • Mozzarella: Opt for fresh mozzarella packed in water for its creamy texture.
  • Balsamic Glaze: Make your own balsamic glaze by simmering balsamic vinegar with a touch of honey until thickened.
  • Customization: Add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a slight kick or a drizzle of pesto for extra flavor.
