Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (85 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp salt

For the Cookie Layer

  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups (190 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup (175 g) chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Preheat and prepare

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.

2. Make the brownie layer

  • Melt butter in a saucepan or microwave.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar.
  • Beat in eggs and vanilla until smooth.
  • Stir in flour, cocoa powder, and salt until just combined.
  • Spread the brownie batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.

3. Make the cookie layer

  • In a separate bowl, cream softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in egg and vanilla.
  • Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined.
  • Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Drop spoonfuls of cookie dough over the brownie layer and gently spread, leaving some brownie exposed for a marbled effect.

4. Bake

  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the brownie layer comes out mostly clean (cookie layer may be slightly soft).
  • Cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares.

5. Serve

  • Serve as is or warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Tips & Tricks

  • Marbled effect: Lightly swirl cookie dough into brownie batter for a marbled look.
  • Fudgy brownies: Do not overmix the brownie batter once flour is added.
  • Chewy cookies: Use room temperature butter for a soft, chewy cookie layer.
  • Cutting: Chill brownies slightly before cutting to prevent crumbling.

Variations

  • Nutty twist: Add chopped walnuts or pecans to either layer.
  • Double chocolate: Use chocolate chunks instead of chips for more intense chocolate flavor.
  • Peanut butter swirl: Drop peanut butter dollops on top and swirl with a knife.
  • Caramel drizzle: Add caramel sauce over baked brownies for extra indulgence.
