Fried cabbage with bacon and onion is a simple yet flavorful dish that’s perfect as a side or a hearty main. The smoky bacon, caramelized onions, and tender cabbage come together for a comforting, budget-friendly meal that’s ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 small head of cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional, for tang)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Bacon: In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Cook the Onions: Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook in the bacon grease over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until softened and lightly caramelized.
  3. Add the Cabbage: Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes, until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned.
  4. Add Garlic and Seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic, smoked paprika (if using), salt, and pepper. Cook for 1-2 more minutes until fragrant.
  5. Finish the Dish: Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and toss to combine. If desired, drizzle with apple cider vinegar for a tangy finish.
  6. Serve: Enjoy hot as a side dish or over mashed potatoes, rice, or with cornbread for a complete meal.

Tips for Perfect Fried Cabbage with Bacon and Onion

  • Use Fresh Cabbage: Opt for a firm, fresh head of cabbage for the best texture and flavor.
  • Don’t Overcook: Cook until just tender to keep some texture in the cabbage.
  • Make It Spicy: Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Vegetarian Option: Skip the bacon and use olive oil or butter for a delicious meatless version.
