This German Apple Pie is a rich, creamy twist on the classic apple pie, featuring tart apples, warm spices, and a luscious cream topping. Perfect for any dessert table, it’s even better after chilling overnight!

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked pie crust
  • ~6 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Pie Crust

  • Fit your pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, crimp the edges, and place in the fridge until ready to use.

2. Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

3. Prepare the Apple Filling

  • Place apple slices in a large bowl and toss with the lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Add the sugar, flour, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt to the bowl. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.

4. Assemble the Pie

  • Transfer the spiced apples into the prepared pie crust.
  • Pour the heavy cream over the apples, ensuring the top is evenly covered.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon sugar over the cream.

5. Bake the Pie

  • Bake the pie at 425°F for 10 minutes.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Cover the pie loosely with foil to prevent over-browning, and bake for an additional 50–60 minutes, or until the cream jiggles only slightly when nudged.

6. Cool and Chill

  • Let the pie cool to room temperature.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 5 hours (preferably overnight) before slicing and serving.

Tips

  • Apple Choice: Tart apples like Granny Smith work best for balancing the sweetness of the cream and spices.
  • Chilling is Key: Allowing the pie to chill ensures the creamy filling sets properly for clean slices.
  • Customize Spices: Adjust the spice levels to suit your personal taste.
