This Dutch Apple Bread is a delightful treat bursting with cinnamon-spiced apples and a buttery crumb topping. Drizzled with a simple glaze, it’s the perfect recipe for breakfast, dessert, or a cozy snack.
Ingredients
Bread:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 ½ cups peeled and diced apples
Crumb Topping:
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp cold butter, cubed
Glaze:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tbsp milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread Batter:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Fold in diced apples.
- Make the Crumb Topping:
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.
- Assemble and Bake:
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle evenly with the crumb topping.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Add the Glaze:
- Mix powdered sugar with milk until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled bread before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, toss the diced apples in a pinch of cinnamon and sugar before folding them into the batter.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Serve warm with a pat of butter or alongside your favorite coffee or tea.
