Runza Casserole

This Runza Casserole is a hearty and comforting dish inspired by the classic Midwestern Runza sandwich. Layers of flaky crescent roll dough, savory ground beef, cabbage, and melted cheese make this casserole a crowd-pleasing favorite. Perfect for weeknight dinners or potluck gatherings, this recipe is simple and delicious!


Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (10 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cans (8 oz each) crescent roll dough

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add the Cabbage and Seasonings: Stir in the shredded cabbage, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender. Remove from heat and stir in the cream of mushroom soup.
  4. Layer the Casserole: Unroll one can of crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pinching the seams together. Spread the beef and cabbage mixture evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top. Unroll the second can of crescent roll dough and place it over the cheese, pinching the seams together.
  5. Bake: Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until the crescent roll dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving. Pair it with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
